Garbage Disposal Replacement - Things to Check Before Calling a Plumber

!±8± Garbage Disposal Replacement - Things to Check Before Calling a Plumber

If your garbage disposal is beginning to act up, or has completely stopped working, there are some simple steps which you can take to identify and fix the problem before calling in an expensive plumber, or replacing the unit. Many times the unit is simply jammed, or has some other fixable problem.

The first step is to turn off the disposal and depress the reset button on the unit. This will be located either on the bottom or side. Firmly and completely press the button. Turn the disposal back on and see if it responds correctly.

Should there be no response at all from the unit, check the circuit breaker for a fuse that has either tripped or blown out. If all is fine there, test the outlet to make sure power is getting to the unit. Simply plug another appliance into that outlet and see if it works.

Providing these things are fine, there is the chance that the cord running to the disposal has developed a short, or a wire has become disconnected. You will need to disassemble the unit to verify all wires remain securely fastened. The last conclusion is that the motor has burned out, in which case you will need to replace the disposal unit.

To check for a blockage inside the unit, unplug the disposal and shut off the power at the breaker panel to prevent an accident. Many disposal units come with a special tool which allows you to manually crank the blade. Locate this tool, or an allen wrench of the same size, and place it into the socket which is located in the bottom center of the unit. Work the blade back and forth until you can spin the blade completely around in a counterclockwise direction. Plug in the unit, turn it on and run tap water through it.

If your specific unit does not have a blade rotation socket, use a wooden broom handle or other similar object to stick into the drain hole to physically rotate the blade and release the jam. DO NOT ever stick your hand into a disposal unit. If something needs to be retrieved, use a pair of tongs.
